About

Goodlife Fitness Centers Inc. is the largest health club company in Canada with over 450 locations across the country, under the banner of four brands.

With the recent pandemic, members may feel hesitant to go in-person to high volume establishments, including gyms and fitness classes. The Goodlife Fitness website was designed to give information, sign up for group fitness classes and give customers access to their accounts.

We have observed that our website:

Problem Space

Doesn’t show the max capacity in fitness classes

Did not display foot traffic in the facility

How might we help users track traffic capacity in real time?

The Solution

A redesign of the current website that includes

  • live foot traffic feature for our users to find a time-of-day that works best for their workout

  • adding capacity limits for classes

This will result in increased gym visits, longer workouts, and customer retention.

Design Process

We conducted interviews with 7 participants to uncover the pain points of the current website. Aside from the general “about you” questions, we also asked more specific questions relating to their fitness behaviors which include:

User Insights

After putting together the affinity map, there were 2 major user insights that were found

Affinity Map

An affinity map was put together to organize the responses from the interviews. Some major themes we focused on include

  • How often users went to the gym

  • How our users scheduled their gym time

  • What they valued at their gyms

  • How they feel about fitness classes

  • What motivates our users to go to the gym

Competitor Analysis

Since the fitness space is quite saturated, we wanted to explore what was currently in the market.

After completing this, it opened up an opportunity for us as we came to know that all of our competitors had no capacity-tracking feature

I Like, I Wish, What If

From our user interviews, an ‘I Like, I Wish, What If’ was put together to gather user feedback.

Feature Prioritization Matrix

The feature prioritization matrix was used to rank and organize features. The top high impact and low complexity feature that was a way to monitor the amount of people at the gym.

User Persona

Sitemap

The main goal for the user flow was for it be as simple as possible. This will enable the user to reach their goal on the website as efficiently as possible. From the home page, the user will be able to view foot traffic at the facility. From there, they can easily find the classes link that will enable them to view fitness class schedules, the capacity for each class and easily book and cancel classes.

Class schedules

For the mid fidelity user testing, users were asked to complete three tasks:

Find out when the gym is the least busiest today

Find max capacity for class #3

Change the current gym location

  • Majority of the information was easy to locate

  • Most users were able to navigate through to the desired information with ease.

Setting up goals, planning an outline, and communication were key to keeping us within timelines.

More user testing to test the user visitation rate.

Introduce add a friend feature to make it easier to share classes.
